I know there are a lot of good shooting ranges, but I don't like to spend 10-15 bucks every time I just want to plink around. Is there anywhere close to denver or colorado springs (I live in Castle Rock) to just head out to a natl park and sight in a rifle, or just have fun with a little target practice?

There is a public range just outside of Colorado Springs up the Rampart Range Road which runs between Woodland Park and The Garden of the Gods. Start at the bottom (in GOG) and drive up for about 20 minutes. The range will be on your right. I suggest going early in the day or mid-week in the Spring and Fall. It can get crowded in the summer and on weekends. There are benches and tables at both the pistol range and the rifle range.

Enjoy and be safe.

Shooting in a National Forest is legal and free as long as it isn't hunting season. Rangers could acuse you of hunting without a license. I used to live in Colorado (Breckenridge & Telluride) We used to have a little shooting range outside Breckenridge that was free but it went away when the area got developed. Always practice safe shooting, especially in an open area like a Nat'l Forest. You don't know who or what may be coming down a trail or wandering through the woods. Shoot toward an embankment so bullets don't go astray. If you plink at cans or targets alway remember to take them home with you and clean up your brass too.

blm land. Drive until you see the sparkle of shell casings and shoot there. You really should find a place with a natural back stop
