If your friend is an expert violin player, or at least an amateur...think of another gift. Violins are pretty personal...some enjoy mellower tones, while others like bright tones.
However, for a beginner, most violins don't vary too much. 4/4 and 3/4 are sizes. If your friend is above the age of usually 15? get a 4/4. This is also referred to as "Full-size." However, if your friend is extrememly small, a 3/4 might be an ok choice. One way to check is to have your friend hold th violin like he would play it, then etend out his left arm under the violin, and try to grab the scroll so that his fingers can wrap around the scroll at the end of the violin. If your friend can do that on a full size, then then full size is the way to go.

The 4/4 and 3/4 are sizes - is your friend an adult of average size? Then the full-size 4/4 is correct. If your friend is very small or is a kid, you need to have an expert help out, and you'll need the friend with you!

Make sure you also get a bow (that's not automatic!), rosin, and a shoulder rest.

If your friend is just wanting to try it out, consider paying for a rental program instead.

Quality is something to think about - unless you want a beginner instrument (basically a box with strings :), expect to pay out some bucks. This is where the rental idea might be a good thing, if your friend isn't sure.

If you purchase, you should consider having a repair person take a look at it and tell you if it's worth the price or if there are major defects. Good luck!

Sizes, full size, 3/4 size etc.

And please don't look for anything its all about sound. Its hard to pick a good violin if you don't play yourself, but I have heard more than my fair share of beautiful looking violins that sound terrible. My violin looks terrible, but plays like a dream.
