my boyfriend is in the military & I don't know what is the cheapest way to call him on the phone. Are calling cards the only way? & do you have any idea which one is more reliable & cheaper? Thank you.

My hubby is in Iraq as well and we use AT&T prepaid phone cards. The current rate is for every minute on the phone card, 3 minutes gets taken off the card because it is international. For example, a 550 minute phone card works out to about 3 hours if you are calling internationally, but 9 hours if you are calling domestically. And also, most Iraqi cell phones have to use phone cards, as far as I know. So he has to call you! So I suggest you go here: http://www.consumer.att.com/prepaidcard/fy/ and then purchase a card. Then you can email him the 800 number and the pin and then he can call you! Hope this helps!

The cheapest way I could find to call the cell phone my husband had when he was in Iraq was Vonage. You have to have a cable/DSL internet connection though. It was still a little more than 30 cents a minute, but it was the cheapest way to call him. If I had to call from my cell phone (Cingular), I paid more than $2 a minute! With Vonage you don't have to have any phone cards or a special plan, you just dial the number and it connects, just like a normal phone. Also, it didn't charge me for the minutes if he didn't answer, like a cell phone or calling card would.

Also, when DH ran out of minutes I could still call him, even though he couldn't call me (he had a pre-paid cell phone). I just knew what time to call him every day and, assuming he didn't have to go out on an un-planned mission, he could answer. He had his phone off the rest of the time though.

My husband is over there and he has a cell phone with a sim card. It costs 10 cents for me to call him and when he answeres its 40 cents for him. He usually ends up at the call center, its cheaper. We have sunrocket.com for our house phone. Dont worry about calling him on missions. My husband doesnt carry his phone with him when hes out.

you could also call around to the different long distance phone company's and get their rates for calling international to Iraq specifically a cell phone.

when my husband was in korea he got a phone hooked up and i called all sorts of different phone companies and got so many different rates and plans. there are different rates for different countries calling internationally and sometimes it costs more when you call to a cell phone.

so inquire about calling cards and calling plans.

btw, maybe keep us updated on your results because it would be good to know for the rest of us. (my husband gets deployed in March)

well you could go with calling cards. go with at&t cuz they are the only american providers over there. call up your phone provider and ask about their international rates. they should have some sort of plan. my fiance is going over soon. i'll be praying for your man. he's gonna come home to you safe

if he has a phone in iraq, i would wait for him to call you. i can't imagine you calling him in the middle of an important mission.

It would be much cheaper for him to call you instead of you calling him.
