wouldn't you just eventually become numb to it? and then... based on relativity.. you would develop new ideas of what happy is...? I mean... what purpose OVERALL would eternal damnation even serve?

and.. this is more of a philosophy question, so religious zealots, please spare me your mundane preaching. think for yourself! don't quote the bible, I have one and I can look up anything i need. I would rather hear real ideas and opnions !

Hell as a concept was developed around 325 ad. with in the Nicean council to control the masses through fear and to extol monies from the wealthy so they could buy their way into "heaven". Hell and heaven are relative terms that are lived in the now. If we are able to love and be gratefull for all that we are, knowing we are children of the Uni-verse/ God/ Source.... then we are living in heaven. it is all perspective.

What's the point of life if one over nth denominations only goes to heaven and the rest to hell? Wouldn't be just right for God to ask me first if I want life given a small chance to succeed making it all the way to heaven? I believe in hell but I don't buy it being eternal damnation. And I don't believe hell as another dimension other than Earth. Yes, only few people like me think this Earth is hell and it's not eternal. And everyone will ultimately go to heaven not just few selected individuals.

With karma and rebirth, earth is like a school where you learn the art of Godhood one step at a time until perfection. That's the ultimate happiness - understanding who you really are.

No one's actually answered this question so far so I think I'll take a stab at it...

Hell is actually not like that... You won't get numb to it. It is ETERNAL torment. You won't get bored. You won't have a different idea about what happiness is. Every moment will be as bad as the previous, and this will never ever end. Imagine! It's scary!

I'm quoting this for the other people that said that Hell is only for the devil and his angels.
Matthew 25:41
"Then he will say to those on his left, 'Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels."

You can look up Matthew 25:46 for yourself.

It is separation, the final separation. A choice between spending eternity with yourself or with others. It is the ultimate "ME" statment. If you have ever been lonely then you have experienced a shadow of what Hell must be like. If you have ever been depressed then you know it does not get better unless you can cling to someone or something else. I hope you understand it is your last choice. You do not become numb to it. No more than a person becomes numb to sensory deprivation, they become catatonic, yes! But is that in any way relative to Happy?

Both Hell and Heaven is here. What we see in our day today life, look around and see for yourself the miseries that is happening out of natural calamities and man made, for the full fillment of their own desires, either an individual, a society, a country or among the religions. All these make our living as if we are in hell. But if you have a peace full living with happiness all around every body sharing the joy and miseries together equally as one, we think it is heavenly. So we are the one who make this Heaven and Hell.

Heaven or hell, there better be something to keep your attention for eternity. I mean, after a few thousand years, even hanging out at St. Peter’s Topless Bar & Casino would get boring. In the long run, Heaven and Hell may turn out to be the same thing.

I would have to agree with you. Christian hell would be eternally boring much like Heaven. After which, onegets so accustomed to everything else, punishment or paradise would not matter. After a few hundreds years of pain or bliss, we are bound to get so tired of the same surroundings that nothing matters anymore.
Satan and his demons wn't be as terrifying as the first time we see them, maybe end up plyaing cards or something.
The angelic hosts would also lose their appeal. Even in Islam, having to face 72 virgins for eternity is rather bland.

I think the threat of eternal damnation was meant to straighten you out before you let yourself get bad enough to deserve going there. That way you can be happy in this life, and in the next.

First off hell was made for Satan and his demons. It was not meant for people. People were made with a will. They can chose heaven or hell. People think that hell will be one big party, but it won't. Why would anyone want to be there for all eternity. They will not see anyone. They will burn for all eternity. there is no happiness. Hell is for people who turn their backs on God. But His Grace is what gives people a chance.

It's a matter of what you believe coz if you believe in Hell you would be trembling in fear instead of questioning it.
Simple logic - if there are two pools : 1 with hot boiling oil and the 2nd with cool aromatherapy water, I give you a choice, which would you choose to be in? Heaven & Hell is the same - it's a matter of belief which will be more comfortable for you!
