Well, they were sponsored by British corporations that were duped into think that there was gold and other precious things for the taking in the new world.

If you study their history, the "starving year" in New England was actually when their sponsors shut off support for lack of profit.

So, I'd go with greed having something to do with it.

The Boston Museum of Fine Arts is pretty good. Maybe that was the draw. Or maybe it was to study at MIT.
