Yes, computers are extremely helpful to law enforcement for numerous reasons:

1) They are able to maintain a large amount of information that can be easily stored and referred to at the touch of a few buttons. These databases store information such as criminal history files, drivers license information, vehicle registration information, wanted persons information, and firearms ownership information, to name a few. Police officers frequently look-up information in these databases to conduct their investigations.

2) There are numerous programs and tools out there that detectives use on a constant basis. In addition to information databases, detectives also use computer aided design to recreate crime scenes with animations and diagrams. Police officers also use computers to perform crime analysis, which involves establishing patterns of criminal activity, and trying to predict when and where the next crime will probably occur.

3) Computers are also extensively used for communication. For example, 9-1-1 operators who answer emergency calls input the information into what is called Computer Aided Dispatch. This information is relayed by a computer network to ambulance, fire department, and police dispatchers who may be in separate locations. The dispatchers use this same computer system to manage police calls for service, determine how many officers need to go to a particular place, and to find out which officers are available to respond to the scene of a call. Police officers can access this information on mobile data terminals (MDTs) in their police cars to find out where they are going, who they need to talk to, and what type of situation they are going to.

4) The Internet has made law enforcement a lot easier for police officers. Police officers are able to share important information with other police officers from around the world. It is less expensive than using the telephone and a lot faster then using the mail. The greatest feature of the Internet involves the use of digital photography. Police officers can send digital images of people, locations, suspect vehicles, and evidence to other police officers in an instant. This saves a lot of time, especially when sharing the information is necessary to catch a dangerous suspect.

5) Police officers use these same Internet resources to get the information to the public, including crime prevention information, missing persons information, wanted persons information, sex offender information, and any other information that people would need to know to keep themselves safe.

the greatest value of the computer age is to 'law enforcement' because it is in effect the biggest 'tracking' system every created.
How any criminal would every place one hand on a computer not knowing that he can be tracked is beyond me. But I guess that's what makes 'law enforcement' so easy.
