"Käs' und Brot macht die Backen rot" is an old saying for reluctant children to eat the staple food.
Mostly the cheese in question would be soft white cheese, and used instead of butter, which was much more expensive.
It means that it's healthy for you, since red cheeks, especially in children, were considered a sign of good health.
I haven't heard that since I was a child myself, and that's ages and ages ago.

much like Americans have word association as slang and Brits got their damn cocky rhyme scheme.....the germans have their ownsaying they always remember.

I know the phrase says red, but in proper translation the term is closer to pink.....like having color or being healthy. This rhyme is a way to remind the children to eat everything on their plates.
