I am not being funny here. I read that there are millions of adults that cannot read, or write, or spell with accuracy, and I'm talking about reading little children's books. How do these adults get by through high school or college if they cannot do the basics? Doesn't anyone cheat them, and how can they be successful in life?

Some of them run major businesses, and they ask their spouse to read contracts for them, so it's not always menial jobs.

I know quite a few people that are like this. Alot of them did not fit so well into school simply because they thought outside of the square & took risks (would now be considered ADD) so they finish school early. Usually they can read the basics of what they need to and have someone do the rest for them. Being successful is more about drive and passion and giving customers what they want, paperwork is really just the icing on the cake rubbish. I fill out paperwork and dockets everyday for them. The education system does not work for a lot of people.

The term is functional illiterate. Over the years I have run into quite a few people like this. I have known two people who admitted to me that they could not read. If you can't read, you certainly cannot write. Some people are passed through school by teachers who don't care. These are the people that end up doing the most menial jobs.

Reading and writing don't necessarily make you intelligent or capable....using your resources to your advantage do!! There are alot people who have severe problems with the fundamental learning...but are fully capable of being a hugely productive member of society. Common sense takes a huge role in certain people's life's!! If you've got it ...then that is it!! I am sure people could be cheated to one degree or another BUT...when you are cheated it is usually because of a person's naivety or inexperience. Reading and writing don't have much to do with that. Experience is the greatest teacher...and this hold true for the literate and illiterate!!
Most people who are considered illiterate usually have some simple reading ability...usually only letter or word recognition...they are often able to graduate from high school and whatnot because of their ability to learn without mastering literacy. In most cases, learning disabilities don't mean a person is unable to learn and function...it means they do not learn in the "average" way. Their brains process things differently...this makes no determination on their intelligence.

Yes. teachers do cheat them and they are wrong in doing so and should be fired. the system is failing and pushing kids though the system to get rid of them And not just the teachers are to blame..the Parents are the main problem. they do not do their job...but just blame the others for their kids problems...they are responsible too. And should be held accountable
