Perfect age right now. My 10 month old has been self feeding since about 7 months. The can chew pretty effectively with just gums. We give my son just about everything including meats. We started out with cooked beans and other soft foods. Cheerios and other baby puffed foods that dissolve easily are good places to start. While they are developing their abilities to chew and swallow, be prepared to have them gag and spit up ocassionally. All part of the learning process. We had to start giving more advanced foods to our boy, he needed the calories as he's way off the growth charts. Ten months old, 29 lbs, 34 inches, not chubby either just huge, as big as most 2 yr olds.

When your baby is between eight and nine months old, you can begin to introduce finger foods to encourage your baby to begin self-feeding. It is very important that the texture of finger foods be very soft, so that your baby can "gum" the foods. To get food soft enough for gumming, many of them will need to be cooked.
Actually you don't have to wait until your baby has teeth before starting finger foods. Even if you 6-7 month old has teeth, they are not going to begin chewing foods until they are much older.
You'd likely wait until you child is sitting up well without support and has the coordination to hold and bring foods to his mouth with a thumb-finger grasp, which is usually at about 7-9 or 10 months of age.
Your baby will probably let you know when he's ready to move up to finger foods by grabbing the spoon you're feeding him with or snatching food off your plate, for example. Eventually baby use his thumb and forefinger (the so-called "pincer grasp") to pick up food. Some infants do better if you offer something new, including finger foods, when they are very hungry and are less likely to get distracted. Other babies get quickly frustrated if they are very hungry and do better if you offer finger foods as a snack or after they have eaten some other foods. You may have to experiment to find what works best for you and your baby.

It is not really based on age, it is based on how developed the child is. If you can answer yes to these questions then she is can probably handle it: Can she pick up small objects with her fingers? Does she have at least two teeth (preferably on the bottom, they are the tearing teeth)? Does she chew well?
Just a note, there are some finger foods that are not good to feed a baby, like small pieces of hot dog, this should wait until the child is at least two and has plenty of teeth to chew it.

She can start on mashed bananas and apple sauce along with little pieces of cheese right around this age. Make the cheese the soft pre-sliced kind so that it will be easier to chew for her. At nine and a half months you can try cherrios one at a time. Just try little foods that are easy for her to mash with her gums in small amounts. the best way is to talk to your doctor and see what the pediatrician recommends.

I have three children, and I think that once my kids were about to try and feed themselves, I gave them finger foods. I would chop them up into tinier parts than I usually would, nothing to choke themselves on, and let them have at it. Once they start to show their teeth, I'd say you could slowly introduce finger foods. Not only does it expand their diets, plus the actions on their gums helps ease the teething process.
