Girlfriends are coming over for sunday roast, want the day to be "just lovely."
What suggestions for either appetiser or desert for a chicken roast with roasted winter vegetables?
Want to impress them with "new found" culinary skills.
Thanks

For a starter, chill a can of grapefruit segments, then stir in a large splash of crem-de-menth (mint liqueur) and leave it in the fridge for an hour or so. It is stunningly refreshing.

Can you beat a Walls vienetta ice cream for desert?

I agree with the pate suggestion. You just need to buy some good shop pate, take it out of the wrapper, mash it up with a splash of brandy, some double cream, a squeeze of orange juice, some fresh thyme and grated rind of the orange. Serve it with crackers, crostini, crusty bread or melba toast - really impressive and you can say you did it yourself!

I'm not great on desserts, so I'll leave that to the others - although if you want simple yet impressive then get a satsuma/tangerine, peel it whole and remove as much white as you can.

Now sprinkle it with icing sugar and then grill it/blow torch it til the sugar caramelises. Pour over a good glug of Cointreau or grand marnier and set alight! Serve with whipped cream. this is nice and light after a big meal, quite seasonal and looks so impressive even though its dead simple!

I do this all the time. Check out the website below for ideas and then adapt them to your taste. Search on appetizer on the food network site.
For desert how about searching for a recipe for a frozen hot chocolate. They are not what you think . They are a great desert for chocolate lovers. By now you have noticed I was a little weak on the appetizer answer, but had no problem with desert.
Have Fun!!

For starters you line a round two inch dish with lattice, then take about 4 boiled eggs, peeled and cut in half and arrange them yolk side down in a ring around the edge, fill the centre with big prawns and poor over this a good prawn cocktail sauce, sprinkle with a little paprika place a couple of the prawns in the centre and you can put it in the fridge while you cook dinner. Then serve it with triangles of bread and butter or toast. Great!!.
For afters buy a sponge flan case (you can get them in Asda's) Place fruit in the bottom, then whip up 3 egg whites until stiff. when dinner plates have been cleared, put lots of ice cream on the top of the fruit then cover all the ice cream and the sponge base with the egg whites, sprinkle with caster sugar and put in the oven on a high heat so the egg white browns quickly.
While it is going brown, warm about 2 tablespoons of brandy, when you are ready to serve pour the brandy over the top and set it alight, while it is alight take it to your table and impress everyone. When it stops burning off the brandy you can serve.
It is called a Baked Alaska. The starter you can call what you like as I made this one up myself. Sheila.

A small bowl of broccoli and stilton soup, your roast dinner then a fruit pavlova. You can make them both the night before for the best results and no hassle. Let me know if you want recipe / instructions (don't want to insult your new found culinary skills!)

What about a spinach dip and crackers for an appetizer and a strawberry cheesecake or Hersheys Pie for desert? Something light and refreshing before and after a hearty comforting meal!

Vegetable sticks and Guacamole or Salsa dips.(Easy and non fattening) or smoked salmon rolls with soft cheese inside.
Since you are using the oven anyhow, why not make a baked creme brulee with fruit, or a fruit crumble (easy and quick)
