Don't think my question is rooted to pick on Islam. I asked the same on Judiasm long ago. The reason I ask I was doing research on a claim on muhammad. So back in the day it seems many nations practed marriage after puberty and considering life expectancy etc. My heart couldn't rest with the claima nd now have better understanding and no problems.

Yes. The average age was based on puberty. And there isn't an answer for the actual age since it is different for every women.

Now, I want to add that a lot of the ages are quite low in number. Such as 6, 9 or 12. But the fact is, that puberty is possible at those ages.

And in the dictionary, it is defined as "the stage of adolescence in which an individual becomes physiologically capable of sexual reproduction."

So, it was considered unethical by the society to have a women unmarried after she had reached puberty and the norm was to marry as soon as one had matured.

And this was a norm not only amongst Muslims, but most Arabs and others around the world.

Hope that helps. =)

That was actually a common practice in most cultures acorss the globe until the early part of the 20th century (some still use that). Marriagable age in most cultures was a very vague concept and usually referred to the time when a girl was able to conceive. Now while, during those times the average age of menacrchy (the onset of the menstrual cycle) was usually in the late teens, there were then, as there aer now, some that eneter into that condition at unusually young age. Also, in most older cultures the worth of a female was base on when they could bear children and IF that cam about at a younger than normal age, then they were married off to prevent them from behaving inappropriately. THEY at least understoond that when a girl was of ana ge to bear children she would do so, regardless of social convention, parental permission, or anything else. Marriage at those ages was a means of curtailing promiscuity among the young. It was a way of kepng the young men from indulgung themslves bu making the women capable of bearing children unavailable to these men that were subject to their own desires. That was also why there was such disparity in ages between husbands and wives. A man being 10 or more years older than his wife was not only accepted, but was usually the norm....a way of making certain that the man would have a wife capable of bearing children for many years and that he would be in a position to support a wife and several children.

IF the modren world would use such a system all the associated problems associated with the subject would simply disappear.

What do you think the average age of a woman at marriage was anywhere 1500 years ago? What do you think the average age of a woman at marriage was in the Ozarks 50 years ago. Look at your own history first. If you go looking at headstones and grave markers in old cemeteries you will find an awful lot of very young wives dead from bearing children. Some of the ages are as low as 12. These are the graves less than 150 years old.
Jerry Lee Lewis, a famous American musician married his 13 year old first cousin (Myra Gale Brown) as his third wife in 1957 or 1958. Not only was it legal but it arroused no concern until the reporters in London England reported it while he was on tour there. The English shut his tour down and sent them home.
If you are asking this to try to score points against another faith look around and make sure you are not standing in a glass house.

Hello,
The question should actually be "what is the average age of a female at marriage 1427 years ago"?
The reason for this is that the average age of a female suitable for marriage in Islam did not differ from the age of a female of other religions, Judaism, Christianity, paganism, etc. In fact, the contemporaries of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went to great lengths to oppose his religion, as is historically recorded, however there is no historical record of them ever opposing, say his marriage with 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). And he was certainly not the first and not the only man marrying a female at a young age. Actually, long before Muhammad (peace be upon him), girls were married even before they reached puberty, in particular in Judaism. There are historical evidences to support this. Islam differs from this in that it legislates a marriage only when a female has reached puberty-and the same goes for males of course. While it is good to ask questions, I encourage you to also research the (authentic) historical accounts, for they certainly (more often than not) can provide you with more asnwers. Hope that helps.
As for the comment by the one who says Muhammad (peace be upon him) was a "pedo", I would highly encourage you to look up the definition of this word in any dictionary. Also, on what grounds are you making this claim? Based on his marriage with 'Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) perhaps??? Well, this is certainly a very strange claim, since 'Aisha was , for one, the only virgin Muhammad (peace be upon him) had married (and only consummated the marriage with her when she reached the age of puberty), and two, the only one married to him at a young age. His first wife was much older than him, a widow with children, and after he died, he hasn't married again for many years. He was married to other women, and 'Aisha was the youngest of his wives. This is certainly not a behaviour of a pedophile. Whether you believe in him as the Messenger of God or not is irrelevant, what IS relevant is that, in calling him a "pedo", you have forced yourself in calling a "pedo" many a priest and rabbi who lived before, during and after Muhammad (peace be upon him). Final word: wise people discuss wisely, even that which is hated by them, but fools resort to lowliness, since they have nothing else to offer.Have a good day!

the can however rub and stimulate their bride at an early age as long as their is no intercourse am not sure if they are allowed to penetrate with .... well not sure about that too graphic and disturbing that it is even something to be discussed but that is part of islam

O ye who believe! enter not the houses of the Prophet unless leave is granted to you for a meal, not waiting till it is cooked. But enter when you are invited, and when you have had your meal, disperse, without seeking to engage in talk. That causes inconvenience to the Prophet, and he feels shy of asking you to leave, but Allah is not shy of saying what is true. And when you ask them - the wives of the Prophet - for anything, ask them from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. And it behoves you not to cause inconvenience to the Messenger of Allah, nor that you should ever marry his wives after him. That, indeed, is a monstrous thing in the sight of Allah
