the second receipt is more for book purposes for them. Once you have the receipt you have already been charged for the meal

That's not always true! My sister, a waitress, accidently gave both copies to a customer, and when she settled her receipts for the night she had to pay! Waitresses only make about $2.50 an hour ~ relying on tips to bring them to atleast minimum wage (which they pay taxes on regardless if they make it or not). She was very upset ~ the customer never returned the receipt and she lost. If you want to do the right thing call the restaurant and verify their policy. You can be taking money from a single mom!

If the card has been swiped in the reading machine, you may still be charged. If the hotel is not obtaining credit automatically and follow the system of claiming reimbursement along with counterfoil, the hotel will loose the money.

It depends if you paid by chip and pin then you will pay for the meal - However if you didn't and you signed for it then congratulation you have just had a free meal on them
One of the receipts is proof of purchase without that they can't get the money from your bank

Yep, they only need to swipe the card and you stick in your PIN, you'll be charged alright.

the 2nd copy is in case you came back and said "oh but I didnt spend that much there". of course with chip & pin it became irrelevant. and lying about it anyway would be fraud and leave you liable to prosecution, so in all reality all it means is you have got 2 its of paper to throw away.

Do you really think for one second that they haven't covered this, If you do then you probably think that there are fairies at the bottom of your garden too!
