Your local newspaper may have some listings in the classified section. Keep in mind that while finding a dog for your mother for comfort will be a great guesture, the care of the dog must also be taken into consideration. Make sure that you dont just get whatever dog is free, but one that will fit the situation.

I realize what your trying to do but is there money for medical care should something happen to the dog? I see it on here all the time: "My dog was hit by a car and his radius/ulna is fractured and sticking through the skin. There's a lot of blood, how do I stop the bleeding and set the bone cause I can't afford a vet?" Unacceptable. The way I see it, if you can't afford to buy a dog you really can't afford to keep a dog. However if you do decide to go ahead and truly feel you can provide properly for this dog, try your local shelter. They will only charge a nominal adoption fee around $70-90 to offset the cost of keeping the dog. They will also already have evaluated them so you will know what you are getting. That way you aren't picking a "Free to good home" dog from the paper.

Hi,
Your Intentions are good but a free puppy will end up costing you a fortune/It probably won't have any shots nor be dewormed..Checked for various Parasites and illnesses..Plus Spay/neuter Comes with a shelter dog as do rabie shots.I urge you to go to your ,local animal shelter and look.Shelters get in very nice dogs all the time.
Another thing to think about...What will you do if your Dog gets Sick? Vets cost money and part of owning a pet is routine Pet care..Plus Emergancies than can be Very Expensive

You will have local animal shelters nearby. For a free dog, you can go to your local animal control shelter. Normally, they charge a small fee for adoption, $30 or so, but after a dog has been there for a little while, they become free (as a last resort to euthanasia).

Remember, if your mom doesn't have the money to care for the health of the dog, don't adopt. The dog may need yearly vaccinations and a yearly check up.

Petfinder.com has a section of classified ads that may have free or low cost pets. I hate to point out the obvious, but if you don't have money to get a pet, and it's going to be for your mother who's not doing well, are you going to have the resources to care for the dog if something happens to your mother? It is unfortunate that your lost your pets, but I would make sure you have the resources to care for the dog its whole life before you bring a dog into your home.

If you don't have any money for a dog, how will you pay for shots, food, toys, etc? Or do you expect your mother in her failing health to pay for everything?

Is it fair to a puppy to get one that young when you are reasonably sure that your mother will pass before the dog will? What happens to the dog when your mother is gone?

I think what you are doing is sweet and a great idea. I would check the paper or the local animal shelter. They usually require a small fee or none at all. I wouldn't go to a pet store, think of all of the poor animals in the shelter who have limited time.

check out your local paper there are always "give aways" in there. or you can go to your local pound, they charge between 10 to 30$ and the dogs are already fixed. or there is your local rescure groups but they charge a bit more.
good luck
