Everytime he is around something soft-like a sweater or a blanket he fluffs it w/his paws and sucks on it then he will go to sleep. My other cat only does it once in a while but 1st cat does it all the time. Is it some kind of comfort to him? (they r both 7mth males)

M R is exactly right! Kneading is an instinct to get the milk to let down. (Human babies do this as well) Soft things such as stuffed animals, sweaters, blankets, etc. remind them of that comforting behavior so they continue it. Not all cats do and it can be a sign of being weaned too early but this isn't always the case. Sometimes it's just a behavior the cat keeps forever.

Because it reminds him of nursing time with mama cat. My 4 cats do it all the time; the 2 younger do it most often that the 2 older.

You may have a cat with obsessive compulsive disorder, better known by the abbreviation for it or, OCD. You might want to considerer taking him to a DVM who specializes in the treament of emotional and psychological disorders in felines. This type of behavior is often biological/neurological in origin and recently some very efficacious results have been documented in administering a theraputic level of an SSRI or antidepressant/anxiety medication such as Prozac, Zoloft, Paxil, Effexor, Welbutron, etc.

Are there any dogs around your cat who he/she may be trying to emulate in an attempt to win your approval? This type of behavior is very common in the canine population and if, for whatever reason, you somehow managed to obtain this cat yet were secretly hoping for a dog, your cat may be acting out. Cats are very sensitive animals and would certainly pick up on these vibes(covert or overt) even though you may deny their existence or not even be cognizant of harboring such attitudes. Best of luck.

Cats do this because they think it is their mother. When kittens are nursing they would "knead bread" on their mother to get the milk moving. I think it's just a habit they continue through life with.

Don't listen to soulguy (the above post) he is trying to pull your chain. Kneeding to cats is like kids sucking on their thumbs, they will do it less and less as they get older.

Do you mean he kind of kneeds? Cat's kneed their mother's for milk when they are young. Soft things probably remind him of his mother and, yes, it probably makes him feel comfortable. I know my cats have never kneeded, but I know of other cats that do. They are all different.
