The steak was handled properly, I took it out of the freezer and put it in the fridge last night. When I got it out of the fridge upon returning home from work, I noticed the green discoloring on the side of the steak, in a fatty part. This is a NY Strip Steak.

The steak was bought just before Nov 21 and was frozen immediately. It smells fine. It thawed in the fridge for 24 hours.

It is caused by oxidation, it won't hurt you. typically it happens when the cryo-vac has a leak. (the plastic vacumpac) You can just trim it off

Actually, it you froze it before Nov. 21 and kept it in the fridge the entire time you were defrosting it it should be fine. The green could be anything, including discolouration from the grade stamp. If you are really concerned trim the fat part away before you cook it. But eat up fast you only have a couple of days after you've taken it out of the freezer to eat it.

When after buying it did you freeze it?

If we're talking like IMMEDIATELY after you got it home, it's probably freezer burn (yeah, it can be green ... seen it myself). It won't taste as good as a non-freezer-burned steak, but it's useable. Cut off the green part and some extra, and cook it as usual.

If it sat in the fridge for a few days before freezing, though, it's likely mold that started growing before it was frozen. If that's the case I'd throw it out.

Is it the USDA stamp? There hasn't been enough time for discoloration if its been properly refrigerated.

Yes! Eat it and share it with friends. The less meat eaters around the better!
