This is so funny like a flash back. It was in the late 50's or early sixties, during the time of some 'big hair" and other crazy things. To add heighth you pull up a handful of hair and slide the comb up and down. The hair gets higher and it is actually knotted. Then you hit it with hairspray and smooth it a bit. If you can find the old LLoyd Thaxton Show or some of the American Bandstand Shows, you would get a very good feel for teasing, or as some people called it ratting hair. There were ladies in the big mall who had colored their poodles to match their little teased coiffes. Glen Campbell was referred to as 'hard hair'.

When you tease your hair, it's to add more volume and a fuller look. The way people do it looks like it would create terrible tangles. Some people take a comb and brush the tips upward toward the roots instead of downward like normal. If you want more volume, hang your head down so your hair is hanging like a mop and blow dry it. You can also apply this method with hair spray by using it underneath instead of on top of your hair. Or you could buy products that you apply before drying.

You take a comb, preferably over a rounded bristle, and brush toward your scalp. It "poof" your hair, and can add volume if you only tease the hair near the middle or back of your head. It is only momentary without hairspray, and can severly damage your hair...causing split ends. If you are going for more volume, blowdry your hair with your head upside down, or facing the ground. It must be wet first, for this to work. Also "aussie" has a great and cheap line of products for extra volume.

It's when you pull up a lock of hair, about and inch wide, and take a comb usually, and brush it lightly in the opposite direction. This causes some of the hair to gather back towards the root while the rest it covers the 'mess' that gives you the volumous look of lift at your roots.
