COBRA is expensive, but it could be better than going without if something would happen.

As a general rule of thumb...if a family is involved, then consider it. If single, I'd pass.

Of course, getting a new job can make this problem go away.

It depends on how old you are and what you have wrong with you. If you're 25 and in good health, maybe you can get away without insurance. I'm 44 and in decent health, but I would never take the chance, even if I was a lot younger. If you are unlucky enough to get cancer and need lifesaving treatment, you'll probably be left to die. Of course that might happen even with insurance.

See if your state has plans to help people in your situation. New York has something. I was paying over $400/month for COBRA and my cost dropped to under $200 on the Healthy NY plan.

You may also want to look at lower cost plans with a very high deductible, like $10,000. It won't help with everyday or minor problems, but it will at least prevent you from being left to die without treatment if you get cancer or some other serious illness.

no, unless the choice was putting food on the table vs. paying for the cobra.

Uninsured medical expenses are the number one cause of personal bankruptcy in the US.

Yes. Insurance is a rip off. You can go to any hospital in the US and you will be taken care of. You may not get the best care, but you will get care.
