If you reported the $1,200 liability on a prior year return, but did not paid it, the IRS will take the money from your 2006 refund, IF you get a refund. The IRS may also charge interest on the $1,200 and take that from the refund also.

If your refund does not satisfy the $1,200 plus interest, you may still have an outstanding liability. If that is the case, you should contact the IRS and arrange for a payment plan.

When you file there is a spot on the form that asks if you owe back taxes. You'll have to enter that $1200 there and it will come out of whatever refund, if any, you might have otherwise gotten. Remember, you aren't necessarily getting a refund every year. Filing your taxes is like balancing your checkbook. Sometimes you pay too much tax by withholding throughout the year. Sometimes you don't pay enough.

They'll accept your tax return if it's filled out properly. Then they'll take any refund you have coming up to what you owe them, and apply that to your debt. If your refund is more than you owe, you'll get the rest of it.
