If you know any of the meds the vet has given him in the past, you may be able to find an over the counter medicine with the same ingredient and try a small amount of that. I understand that many people advise against giving a dog a med without a written Rx from a Vet, but sometimes desperate times call for desperate measures. As far as the benadryl goes, the only thing it would do is make him drowsy. It has absolutely no medicinal value unless the dog is suffering from an allergic reaction to something. If you want to just help the dog to fall asleep this probably would work and you wouldn't have to worry about the dog being allergic to the medication since it is after all antihistamine. Good luck...

I'm sure what you mean is a collapsed trachea. Thats were the windpipe is flattened and gives the dog a honking cough. It is truely a physical problem. Cough suppressants might give minor relief... like 1/4 tsp of something with Dextromethorafan in it. A codiene cough suppressant would work best, but requires a prescription. The surgery is expensive, but it is aimed at implanting rings to hold the trachea open. If money is the main issue against the surgery... many vets offer "Care Credit".. . Its a line of credit that allows you to do an expensive procedure and pay it over several months without interest (for a while). If you have good credit, you might qualify for that. Good luck.

NO,do not give the Yorkie anything like that as it may do more harm than good.
If you did anything you might use a cool mist humidifier in the room where he sleeps.
Though the vets office is closed they usually have an answering service as vets know that emergencies happen.
If your dog is old, this cold could turn into pneumonia. Pneumonia at any age is hard to deal with and with his age he might not be able to handle it.
You really need to call the vet tonight and do not wait til in the morning not to mention that if there are any home remedies that you could do for your Yorkie, your vet can tell you.

you can try a very small amount of benadryl but don't use to much. it will cause him to be very sleepy and he'll probably sleep all night. don't use more than like 1/4 teaspoon. the collasped trachea is very expensive to fix especially if he is a very small yorkie and most often times it isn't affective. however i've seen many dogs to just fine and live long lives even with the injury.

Don't ever give your dog any medication not specifically prescribed by a vet. Someone told you to give the dog benadryl DON"T DO IT! You don't know how your dog will react. Wait until you speak to the vet. If you have to call the emergency vet.

Never administer medications without consulting a vet. I'm sure there is a 24 hour vet hospital that would give you free advice if you call them. Good luck!

I don't want to sound mean but do your friend a favor and have him put down. It is very hard, so maybe you can have a friend go with you. Please don't make him suffer because it will hurt you. Do the right thing even though it hurts.
God bless you
