Click start, click on run, type msconfig

Go to the startup tabs. You should see there the programs that start up when windows is loading. Uncheck all the ones that you dont want to start. Only uncheck the software that you know!

Good Luck.

OK, there are a lot of different things going on here. Some of the things you need to do in order to stop things from starting up when your OS does:
1) Clean up your Startup menu
a. go to Start > All Programs > Startup and right-click > delete anything that you don't want auto-starting during boot up. then restart your system and re-check the startup menu. If something has reinstalled itself, it's likely spyware/adware.
2) Go to Start > Run and type msconfig. Make sure selective startup is checked and then click on the startup tab. Go through the list and uncheck items that you don't want running at startup. If you don't know what an item is, go to: http://www.sysinfo.org/startuplist.php or just search on yahoo or google for the item to find out what it is and what it does and whether or not you should uncheck it. Once done, restart the system and when it boots up again, check the option to not show the config window at startup.
3) Run a good spyware/adware program such as adaware:

And you can always right-click the item in the tray app and click quit or stop or whatever that particular app uses to stop itself.

What most people don't know is that every time you boot your computer a whole mess of "hidden" programs load in the background. Some of these hidden programs are essential, but most aren't. Turning off some of these hidden programs can significantly increase your computer's performance and reliability.
Go to Start > Run. Type MSCONFIG in the "Open:" box and then either press enter on your keyboard or click on the OK button. This launches Microsoft's System Configuration Utility. Click on the Startup tab (the tab at the far right). Click on the Startup tab . The only startup items you absolutely need are:

ScanRegistry
TaskMonitor
SystemTray
LoadPowerProfile
Your antivirus program (trust me, you won't have a hard time figuring out which one is your antivirus program. It is pretty obvious.)

EASY..
- Click Start.
- Click Run.
- Type msconfig.
- Click OK.

When the System Configuration Utility window opens, look at the set of tabs across the top of the window. Find the last tab, labeled “Startup”, and click it. This will show you the Startup List, which contains all of the items that start automatically when you boot your computer and Windows begins to load.

Now, you can freely comb through this list and remove programs that don’t necessarily need to load when your computer boots up. When finished, you’ll need to reboot before your changes can take effect.

Be careful!! You should decide beforehand which programs you want to remove from the startup list. If you blindly remove programs from the startup list, you may lose some system functionality. If you’re not sure what a program does, try searching Google for that program’s name.

A couple of different ways.

Use msconfig

Start/Run/type msconfig click ok

Startup tab. Uncheck what you don't want to run at startup.
This will leave you computor in selective start up mode. I personaly don't have a problem with this.

Use hijackthis. When this program is run, it will produce a log. Find the programs you don't want to start up and check fix. The programs won't start at start up and your computor will stay in nrmal mode at start up.

Depends on what you are trying to do. If you want to play a game for a while, try a clean boot. This prevents from loading all but the essential Windows components. I use it all the time. Also, try going into the control panel and deleting programs that you don't want have on your computer.

most apps have an option to turn off autostart in their options or preferences .. or you could use msconfig in ur run dialogue ... or you could use a utility like system mechanic that has a startup manager that simplifies it ...
