There is a variety of reasons for the difficulty of attaining total spiritual mastery. First, the modern duties and responsibilities of the average person, esp if one is married and supporting a family, do not allow the time and energy to pursue his religion or spiritual prowess to the highest level. Secondly, the great amount of scriptures,historical texts(some almost 2500yrs old) take a lot of time and effort to master. It thus takes great concentration and many decades for an average person to become well-versed. Unless you are specially gifted or an incarnation. Thirdly, the endless religious wars over the past two millennia, including those over the past centuries have discouraged many individuals to become really serious about pursuing any religion. The percentage of mankind who have 'muddied the waters', becoming extremists or practiced deviant forms of the religion, is small and have not influenced the majority. By the time one is 40, he should attain an ideal level of spirituality, else he might have been passionate enough and has not got what it takes;still one must persevere, if he harbours some beliefs. Just like mastering a language, e.g English, to its highest level, one has to practice it diligently daily. However, the majority of us now are not likely to attain enlightenment at a young age, given the modern distractions in daily life. Unless one is willing to sacrifice everything in life, make long journeys on foot, retreat to the mountains and meditate seriously for 5-10yrs to reach a spiritual pinnacle. Sure the sacrifices are the greatest, but the results would benefit society on a huge scale, just as the few great religious prophets,saints and yogis have done.
