Well i am a vet and Chocolate contains theobromine. A stimulant found in the cocoa bean, theobromine increases urination and affects the central nervous system as well as heart muscle. While amounts vary by type of chocolate, it's the theobromine that is poisonous. As for age 6 weeks is ok. So you are right.

I agree, 8 weeks is fine. Usually the vets I've worked with recommend 7-8 but in some tiny breeds they may not be eating solid food until 8-10 weeks. The most important thing to remember is that there is a critical window for socializing a dog between 8 adn 16 weeks... after that, a dog may never get used to new things easily. Get them around 8 weeks, make sure they are regularly vaccinated (my vets use the same protocall - 8, 12, and 16 wks) and introduce them to as many people and other dogs and social situations as you can in the next 8 weeks. It will make for a much better adjusted dog in the long run!

Puppies do better if they are kept with the mother until 12 weeks particularly small breed puppies. I have a small breed puppy and could not take her home until 12 weeks. As for pork I must be among the minority because I KNOW not to feed my dog pork. I NO I don't feed her chocolate either.

You sound a bit angry there. All I try to do is educate people, you can't get angry. I got reported for a violation for calling someone who wants a dog as a fashion accessory because she was letting her new toy chiuaua (sp??) have chocolate, and said that she didn't want him anymore because he peed on her bed and would bite her, along with many many other things.
You are getting angry about the time to get a puppy- everyone has different ideas on when to get one. We got one of ours at 7 weeks. Some breeders let them go at 6 weeks, others not until 10 weeks. It is personal preference mostly.
As for a chocolate dog story....I worked at a vet as well and we got in a yellow lab that ate a whole batch of chocolate chip cookies. He was extremely sick (ended up dying even after a couple treatments of activated charcoal and IV fluids) and we had to wear rain jackets when by him because of the extremely bad diarrhea that smelt like chocolate. Needless to say, I couldn't even smell chocolate for the next couple weeks without gagging.

I have always heard, and even from my actual vet, that the ealiest a puppy can leave is 8 weeks but ideally it is 12 for socialization reasons. I was lectured about taking my puppy home at 3 1/2 weeks old until he learned that I had no choice due to a bad incident with the mother and an extreme illness. This is when we discussed when puppies should leave because I was (and stillam) using my mom's golden as a "surrogate" mother for Kya for helping teach her, keeping her socialized, and helping her through the seprartion. I bottle fed her and nursed her through it and she's done fine but the vet told me the ages he suggested for pups leaving.

I agree! My Yorkies were both 8 weeks old when I got them. They are just fine, they have had all their shots and are healthy and wrestling as I type. It's not too early! It isn't healthy to feed dogs human food period! Especially if you want them to live long healthy lives!! No I do not feed my dogs chocolate! My dogs never get human food!!! It's not good for them!

8 weeks in my opinion is fine, and i do know some people that will not consider it until they are 12 weeks. I do not agree with that either, but some people are set in their ways and own beliefs that changing their mind is not going to happen. There are so many contriversys in life and this is one of them.

I knew all that, including the fact that they can be adopted at 8 weeks old. Thanks though for telling everyone.
