I love bringing my stuffs(water bottle, some files, maps, etc) in my backpack everywhere I go but heard that the security are pretty strict in most museums in DC and extensive check will be required.Any experience to share?

This shouldn't be a problem at all. Most museums have a guard who pokes a stick into your bag and looks around. Some might have an x-ray. Either way, it's not a problem and you might as well avoid having to buy water down on the mall. The website seems to indicate that you should avoid bringing food.

You'll be fine if you don't have weapons. Don't bring anything you wouldn't be allowed to take on the plane as a general rule of thumb (though you may keep your shampoo out of the little plastic baggie).

Some museums have an x-ray belt, other have someone stick a stick in your bag and poke around. If the latter is the case, open your bag while waiting in line to save time. You can buy water anywhere, but be warned: The closer you get to the touristy areas, the more expensive it gets. You can just carry your own bottle in your hand if you don't have a bag and skip the bag check all together.

As long as you don't have anything that could be used as a weapon or anything metal, you should be okay. I haven't been to the museums in a while, but I'd assume they'd scan bags and/or look through them. If you only have water/maps with you I don't see that there would be a problem.
Check the websites of the museums to see if they have any information on bags in their FAQ sections.

just don't take ne thing metal or ne thing that would look like a weapon. most museums just have u go into a seperate line from those who don't have a bag and put it through a scanner. if it goes off they take u to the side while they check ur bag. that's about as bad as it gets. it shouldn't take too long but mainly depends on the amount of people they have to go through

yes it is extensive checking in the museums just like airports. Travel as light as you can, you can buy water anywhere, maps are everywhere so if I were you just your cell, and wallet will do

There will be bag checks and lots of them. They aren't that bad though. definitly not as annoying as the coat checks. if you wear a jacket they make you take it off and empty pockets/ run through scanner. i went to like 4 muesuems in one day- it seemed as if i had to keep taking my coat on and off- it go so annoying.

hope u have fun in D.C.- it's so pretty this time of year-of course it's always breathtakingly pretty to me.

in the smithsonian try to travel as light as you can. they have strict checking, but its worth it. even if you cant travel without alot of stuff everything will be provided for you (maps, food, etc). (if youre looking for food, then the national gallery of art's cafetiria is the best!)
