If the gall bladder is infected, the individual will tend to be quite ill, and surgical removal is about as vital as it would be with acute appendicitis.

If the gall bladder has stones in it and the stones are lodging in the bile duct, the person will have severe and recurrent pain until the gall bladder is removed.

However, if the stones are just sitting there and not moving, not causing obstruction, and the gall bladder itself is not inflamed or infected, then you could just watch things.
