0.9%NS means that there is 0.9 grams of sodium chloride per 100ml of solution. Set up the equation:

0.9/100 = x/1000

Solving for x shows that 1000ml of 0.9%NS contains 9 grams of sodium chloride.

9 grams in 1000 ml. will give 0.9% normal saline.Theoretically, whatever is to be put in blood should have same osmotic pressure as that of blood. Two liquids with same osmotic pressure are called iso-osmotic or iso-tonic.Normal saline ideally should be isotonic with blood.0.9% Sodium Chloride solution is actually little hypertonic. But the error is negligible and for simplicity of calculations it is assumed that 0.9% solution is isotonic with blood.
