I don't have a treadmill and I don't like to run outside, so is running in place like for example in front of a tv the same as actual running and/or running on a treadmill?

Not really, but close ... sort of. It uses a different range of motion, doesn't tend to offer as challenging or diverse a workout & I believe will cause greater stress on your joints. Also, most people tend not to be able to do a long routine and generally have a lesser sense of accomplishment. In general, I wouldn't recommend it.

You might try seeing if the local rec center or gym has a treadmill or seeing if you can pick one up discount. Treadmills tend to be able to give you different types of workouts based on their programing (adjusting speed & incline). And, what's wrong with running outside?

Treadmills burn more calories because they have an incline and can be set to a certain speed so you know just how fast you are going, and for how long. Maybe try to join a gym, then you don't have to buy a treadmill yourself and can use all the other machines.

Not quite: There is a slightly different kind of motion. And personally I think the treadmill would be easier on your joints than pounding on them while not really letting them move.
