I'm looking at the JVC HDR1 in-dash HD Radio. I like the idea of getting one for the multicast broadcasts on some of the stations. There's one in Boston which broadcast light rock on the main channel and smooth jazz on the HD2 channel, a format that's been missing in this area for a few years.

There are also some desktop receivers available. It's just that the units are still somewhat expensive at $175, and even if you get one w/ the $50 rebate it's still pretty pricey. But at least you don't have to pay monthly fees like for satellite radio.

Yes, the sound quality is much better than regular analog radio. It's free and I don't want another monthly payment. There are additional formats called multicasting that you can only get with a HD Radio receiver. Those secondary stations are mostly commercial free. Check your local staions to see which ones multicast secondary stations. Some even have a third format.

I would consider buying an HD television for Christmas. With HD, you get an image with better quality. This is because of the tiny mirrors used in the screen. If you are to get a tv. I would recommend you get a wide screen t.v. with a 16:9 aspect ratio with a LCD display. Plasmas are good, but if you were to accidently drop it or ruin the screen you would be able to repair it.
