I downloaded a movie (hostel) in AVI format, but when i try to preview it, it won't open.

Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error. This can occur when another program or operating system component encounters a problem but does not communicate the nature of the problem to the Player.

Anybody who has had this problem please help me out...if there is something i need to download to make this work. Its in AVI format!

Thank You!

Is it 100% done.Iif not let it finish. If it is, open it in real player. If that dosent work the file is corrupt and god is telling you to stop downloading movies.

Is the download complete?

I know for a fact that you cannot preview partially downloaded AVI files in LimeWire, only MPEG files.

If you have completely downloaded the file and you cannot view it, then most likely you have a corrupted download or the wrong codec. I would start with installing Divx from www.divx.com. This is the most popular AVI codec.

If that doesn't work, then download the K-lite codec pack that the other user recommended.

Check to make sure you have Media Player set to play AVI files by opening media player, then go to applications menu (click on the little arrow down next to the minimize button) go to tools, then options. The first tab is player and make sure you have the download codecs checked there then click on the file types tab and go through the list to see if AVI is selected.

Maybe the reason is that you don't have the right codec to open the file. I suggest you install K-lite codec pack, it's free and once installed, you can view almost all the movies downloaded, even .flv file (movies downloaded from youtube, googlevideo, metacafe...) with its integrated program, or with WMP as well.

Here's where to get it:
http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm
(18.5MB)

If the file size of K-lite is too big to you, you can also try out a smaller versions of it:
Codec Pack All in 1 6.0.3.0 (9.25Mb): http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Codec_Pack_All_in_1.htm

or

XP Codec Pack 2.0.6 (5.95Mb): http://www.free-codecs.com/download/XP_Codec_Pack.htm

If this can't solve your problem, I think you can give a try to Video Fixer: http://www.video-fixer.com/download.htm
This program can fix broken downloaded video, but it's not free.

Hope this help, friend.

I can't give you a 'technical' answer like my pre-teen kid can, but something similar hppened to me. I deleted the download and tried another source. I didn't have a problem with the second download. Since it's a share program, you don't know what the other guy downloaded. Better roll the dice and try again!

I'd have my super-computer-savy kid answer, but it's way past his bedtime!
