I do not allow shoes to be worn inside my house. When we come inside the front door the shoes come off. Almost all the time I am wearing my white socks. I never bother to put on slippers or anything it is just easier to take off your shoes and just walk in your socks. My kids do the same thing. They come in the house and they just kick off their shoes. Most of my regular guests know about the rule because they have visited before and they take off their shoes without any disscussion. Some people need a little reminding. You just have to say "oh don't forgot the shoes off rule." Whenever I invite someone over for the first time I try to let them know ahead of time about the rule of the house.

Usually I will just causally bring it up at the end of the invite. I will say something like "I almost forgot just to let you know we do not wear shoes inside its a house rule." That way when they arrive they will not be shocked. For kids that visit I just tell them when they come inside. "Please take your shoes off here you are not allowed to wear shoes inside."

Everyone that visits has no problem with the rule. I have new neighbors that have come over recently unannounced and I just greeted them at the door and when they came in they saw my socks and pile of shoes at the doorand said. "Oh do you notwear shoes inside the house." I said "just take yours off if you would like to come in." They did and come to find out they were nervous about inviting us over because they have a shoes off rule too. So now we visit each other frequently because we both believe in everyone walking around the house in comfy socks.

There is a pile of shoes at my front door - a good sign that I do not allow shoes to be worn in my house. Inside we go barefoot. I really think its rude of guests to cart prickles, grease and dog poo or whatever on to my carpets. I've grown up around a lot of steel caps so nearly everyone I know takes their shoes off. Although I have a friend who's floor is so dirty, from shoes amongst other things, that I would not walk in their without them.
PS I have to wonder about the feet of people that never take their shoes off - must stink there.

I grew up in a traditional Japanese household, and shoes were never allowed to be worn inside the house. We wore houseslippers.

Now that I own a house of my own, my husband and I carried on the tradition of removing our shoes inside the house. We wear slippers.

When we have guests, I always warn them in advance of the expectation in my house. We just explain the traditional aspect of it along with how it makes more sense not to drag the excess dirt into our home. Everyone has responded positively and some even bring their own house slippers along.

I never wear shoes in my house. it is a comfort thing mostly. but the house stays cleaner and less worn out with out wearing shoes in the house. it is optional for guests. I prefer workers to keep their shoes on.like if a plumber, electrician etc.come into the house.I don't want the sweaty feet of strangers in my house.

I live in an apartment building in New York City so shoes MUST be taken inside the house unless you're okay with someone stealing them.

But, in my house we take them off when we change into our around the house/pajama clothes (almost immediately). My mom is a neat freak as am I so it's not like the floor will be dirty for long.

When we go to the houses of our family/relatives, we take our shoes off as we take our coats off.

I'm barefoot in the house simply because I like to be, but I would never expect my guests to remove their shoes (unless they were muddy or wet - and I've never had a guest NOT take their shoes off when that happens).

EVERYONE takes off their shoes before entering our home, I'm generally the one cleaning the wood floors & like to keep the germs outside as much as possible. We all wear slippers & our guests wear slippers or socks...anything but the shoes they wore through the mud & who really knows what else is lingering on the soles of shoes...EW!
I do excuse the dog, she doesn't wear shoes & the only thing that saves her is that she's cute. :)

Our family doesn't wear shoes in the house. Guests, however, are allowed to wear shoes. I think it's unbelievably rude to ask guests to take their shoes off. Some people aren't comfortable with that. Your floors will recover.

I usually wear socks or slippers but my parents do not allow shoes on their carpet... they have off-white carpet and people would just either go barefoot or wear their socks.. now I do it as habit I guess in my own home, but people can wear whatever makes them comfy in my house
