I got my license when I was 15, and used my grandmothers 94 Geo Prizm for a few months untill I got my first truck for my 16th birthday, a 2 year old 1994 Silverado. It was great. They are reliable (that has 300,000 miles on original motor and transmission), not too pricey (depending on model), decent on gas mileage, and overall pretty safe. I have to agree with the higher-up-see-better-and- are-safer. Not to mention the fact that they are tough and have a good resale value, plus, learning to drive something bigger makes us appreciate something a bit smaller, and makes you pay more attention because it is bigger, and of course, as already mentioned, highly versatile. As far as cute factor...........Ummmm lol It is very cute if it's a chick driving one (plus guys respect the hell out of me lmao) Chevys, GMCs, Pontiacs, all GM vehicles for the most part are great vehicles.

Prizms are great as well. I've also had 2 of those. They are the Chevy equivalent of the mentioned Corolla, also a good car. The aforementioned 94 and currently a 99. They're not that cute, I guess, but the 99 gets about 34 mpg, and my car retails for around $2,500 with 200,000 miles, so thats not too bad. Being a cheaper car, though, of course, it's becoming obvious with the interior peeling and stuff like that, but it's a commuter car, so I don't care. lol
I'm on my 2nd Silverado (a 2001), and I can't complain on it either. This one has 223,000 miles and is still running almost perfect. I totally reccomend these trucks. I've yet to run into a really unreasonable problem with one.
There's a lot of great cars out there. Check out Consumers Digest for crash test ratings, recalls and things of that nature before you buy.
Good luck with whatever you choose!

I'd get a Pickup truck for the following reasons:

1.Useful for all the school activities
2. Good Used Selection
3. Only 2 seats
4. Better visibility for the Driver

Toyota, Nissan, Honda's are the safest.

Any car can be dangerous though, especially to a new driver. A lot of teen drivers get "superman syndrome" and think they are race car drivers (I did too) Or they are just too inexperienced to realise what they are doing wrong. I suggest also getting one of those "Teen Trackers" in the car as well. It alerts you when they are going too fast, where they are, where they have been, and if they go where you don't want them to go.

Plus it can lower your insurance because it is considered a security device. If someone steals the car you can just tell them where it's at.

Try www.yourteensdriving.com

That's where I got mine.

you need to definately look into getting a sedan-style vehicle. One with 4 doorways, doesn't sit down too low, and isn't any longer great sporty. coverage is negative for automobiles like that, highly for an adolescent motive force. also, bypass for an older vehicle. do not bypass for a sparkling one except you want severe funds. also want your moms and dads to cosign, yet it really is in case you bypass to a dealership particularly of shopping for from a private proprietor. My first vehicle turned right into a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire. My moms and dads really offered it for me because my mom works at a vehicle dealership. besides, I paid for gas and the reassurance (about $50 a month for coverage). It turned right into a astounding vehicle and it quite good structure. It turned right into a effective first vehicle and it became all mine. It were given about 30 miles in line with gallon which became effective because then i'd in common words fill up about once per week (decrease back at the same time as gas became low-priced it wasn't that undesirable both).

I still drive the car I drove as a teenager, a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer V8. I felt like the **** with an SUV that could outrun ricers. It almost killed me a couple times so I recommend a used japanese SUV. Something like a Forester or CRV. Something that when you wreck you won't cry too much about.

You want something used, safe, and reliable. A Toyota Camry or Honda Accord is just about perfect, or if you want bigger, they're safer but more expensive to insure (like my '97 toyota Avalon)
