Both. The stomach flu is contagious even sometimes before you even know you have it and after you are over the worst part.

The short answer is yes. "Stomach flu" is what we medical professionals would call viral gastroenteritis can be contagious before, during and after vomiting. Thes prevention is good hand washing. There are a variety of other reason a person may vomit, not all of them are due to an infection, and not all gastroenteritis is due to viruses. Some gastroenteritis such as dysentery and travelers diarrhea is due to bacteria. Food born illness, food contaminated with toxins or bacteria can also causes vomiting. Vomiting can be cause by adverse reactions to medications like aspirin and antibiotics, or due to overdoses of medication. Excess alcohol intake is notorious for causing vomiting.

The stomach flu is very contagious especially when you have a fever.
But I would not recommend to stay around to see if they have fever or not.
They are still highly contagious.
