Hepatitis C virus has been shown to survive for up to 2 months in blood outside of the body. This is why the transmission routes include household items such as toothbrushes and razors, the toothbrush goes into the gum and sometimes bleeds so blood gets on the bristles. If someone accidentally used the wrong toothbrush - it is possible to transmit the virus. However the most prevalent transmission route right now is IVDU (intravenous drug use)- even if you have your own works etc. please make sure you don't ever share water, filters, snorting equipment. Check out www.c-level.org.uk and if you're in the UK - give them a call and they will answer all your questions about Hep C.

hcv survives longer outside the body than hiv does.

hcv can also reconstitute if the blood comes in contact with fluid.
so your not really all that safe had you had an open cut on your finger and somehow picked up dried blood without knowing it and it entered your wound (blood stream) you could get it. (money is passed every day from person to person and this is the most widely spread germ infected object used)

more than likely you wouldnt get it, but it's possible.

14 days is what we learned at work in the hospital, it can also be in urine and a lot of men urinate anywhere (believe me I have seen it done), good reason to wear shoes outside. My mother got Hep C. from dialysis and we learned all sorts of ways to avoid getting it while taking care of her as well as what I learned in classes at the hospital. It is passed through blood transfer either a needle stick or blood getting on a open sore.
