Here is the order how I place the braces on my patients:
First appointment: "the spacers." Also known as separators, they are small rubber bands that are placed between the back teeth for 5-7 days.
Second appointment: "the molar bands." The spacers are removed and and the metal bands are placed on the back teeth. And 1 week later...
Third appointment: "the brackets." Using special adhesive technique (bonding), a tiny orthodontic bracket is attached to each tooth. Then, a small wire is thread from one side of the molar band, through the brackets, and to the other side of the molar band. A small rubber band is used to hold the wire tightly to each tooth's bracket.
Notes: No shot required. You may feel some discomfort for a few days. Motrin and Advil will be helpful. Dental wax is often given to cushion the lips.

First they put in spacers, if needed to give the room htey need to put on the brackts that go around your molars. Spacers are just little rubberbands that are stuck between 2 teeth. they feel like a piece of meat stuck between your teeth. Then they put on the back brackets. They are held on by a special glue compound that is set using a UV light. Next they put on the brackets which are put on in a simular fashion. They are little squares of metal that have to be positioned perfectly. Then the wires are put on. Usually they are put on starting from the middle and work the way to you back teeth. They are held on by tiny rubberbands. (You get to pick the color!) The wires are different strengths so how much it hurts depends on how strong the wire is. They wont hurt right away though. It usually hurts the next morning. It helps to gargle and swish around warm water on them. After a few days they wont hurt any more..atleast not until they are tightened again. Some times they will cut your mouth a little. The doc. will give you wax to put on them and it will help. There are no shots involved. Braces realighn you teeth in order to make them straighter, or improve underbites, and overbites. They arent all that bad. Just make sure you follow all the directions you are given so you dont have to have them again or longer than planned.

Relax - no needles
The only part that hurts when you get braces is when they put the spacers in your molars to make room for the brackets to go around them. It's not too bad but you know they are there. Everything else is painless. They use a special glue called dental cement to put the front brackets on and put bands around your molars. It is mildly uncomfortable, but not painful. However I recommend chewing gum every time they adjust them. This will help with the discomfort as your teeth move. Just make sure it's gum that won't stick to dental work. Do everything your orthodontist tells you to do to make the process as quick as possible.

It doesn't hurt to get braces put on. It isn't a lot of fun, but it doesn't hurt. They use this plastic thing that holds your lips and tongue away from your teeth so that they remain dry. Then they glue the brackets on and then add the wires and whatever appliances you may be needing. LIke I said, getting them put on doesn't hurt, but the day or two following will probably require some motrin for the sorenss caused by your teeth moving. It's all worth it in the end .. . . even though the end is 2 years away!!

no... doesnt hurt during the operation... i just got em. They put a kind of glue thing that they dry with a blue light. They then get a bracket, and center it on the glue. They let it dry, and then they put a wire. VOILA. It'll hurt the first week and a half or so and its hard to clean, but just stay cool...i got a homework pass!!!! you'll probably get it tightened every month or so and that hurts like hell, but it stops hurting in a day or two...Not as bad as it sounds really.

AS STATED PREVIOUSLY THERE AGREE SMALL SPACERS PUT IN BETWEEN THE MOLARS SO BANDS MAY BE PLACED ON THEM. THE ACTUAL BRACKETS ARE ATTACHED TO THE TEETH WITH A SPECIAL CEMENT AND MAY BE HARDENED USING A SPECIAL BLUE LIGHT.
THERE IS NO SHOTS. IT MAY FEEL TIGHT ON YOUR TEETH WHEN THE WIRES ARE CHANGED. SOME IBUPROFEN (ADVIL) CAN BE VERY HELPFUL.
