Why does the nurse sometime slap your butt before an injection there? Has anybody experienced this? What'd you do after?

It kind of freaked me out.

Some nurses beleive that by slapping the area it tempoarily "numbs" the nerve endings so you don't "feel" the shot, usually these are older nurses as the practice was quite common in the 50s and 60s, it's really just an "old wive's tale". Either way shot or slap it still hurts. LOL

I often use the slap before administering my injections..

When I slap I can feel the slap but not the injection... The nerve endings that register the feeling of the slap don't have enough time to reset to register the feeling of the needle.... So the actual injection feeling (which I hate) is not felt at all..

I have never had a nurse or dr. use the slap when administering an injection... But knowing what I do and having had 10's of 1,000's of injections over my lifetime I would probably have no reaction at all...

If it made you uncomfortable talk to the dr. and explain what happened and why it made you incomfortable so the dr can talk to the nurse...

I have never slapped anyone's butt before giving an injection. For a subcutaneous injection into the fatty tissue I pinch the fat. For an intermuscular shot in the buttocks you hold the tissue down so that you can get it in the muscle. I rub with alcohol prior to and after to cleanse the area and prevent infection. Someone who is slapping your butt is not following with proceedure and I question what their intentions really are.

I have never slapped the area if was fixing to inject something into. My husband (we are both paramedics) pokes the area first to make a mark so he has a spot to aim for. That hurts though. I yelled at him for it.

It's the same as when junkies slap their inside elbow joints before they shoot up. Causes increased blood flow to the area and also the slight pain causes an endorphin increase to make the shot less painful.

Oh, and I thanked her :)

My nurse use to pinch me where I was going to get the shot. She tried to tell me it numbed the skin. If a nurse slapped my bottom today, I'd ask her if she would like to flip her over and return the favor!

I havent heard of that being done in EONS. They used to do it all the time because it desensitized the area to the pain of the needle.

But is is kinda freaky.

Maybe the old lady was just getting her fix.

Did she say, "you've been a bad boy" before she slapped you?

LOL, I'd say she was just trying to cop a feel!
