I think they're death machines. I have seen far too many of them upside down . The causes of death are decreased radius turns , improper high speed lane changing , blow outs and believe or not cross-winds.
Maybe the posters that live in the UK don't see these things but I drive the 3- dimensonal roads of the American West where in a 150 mile stretch of interstate highway one can easily go up and down 15000' of vertical elevation that of course include a lot of high speed turns.

Mostly I think the 'hate' stems from 'envy', in that they wished they had one or could afford one. "Thou shalt not covet they neighbours 4x4".
Personally, I have no plans to buy a 4x4, having driven plenty of them during my long ago Army career in the 1950s and 60s. I have also driven a monster Range Rover owned by a company I have worked for, last year. I found the vehicle sluggish and quite useless in town.
The 4x4 or Chelsea Tractor, as it is called here in London, is very much a 'here to stay vehicle'. People should just get used to the idea until some new fad, fancy or fashion in vehicles comes along. In the States its the 4x4 pickup.
Boy racers are no problem, they're only doing what I at 65 still do, push my V6 Mondeo to it's limit - so far 150 but I'm convinced it will do a bit more if tuned up.

Strange, isn't it? If you read these answers, most of them are inaccurate, because their writers just don't like 4X4s. No logical reason, they don't have to buy or run one, and the silly term 'gas guzzlers' is always used to refer to them. Many 2X4s are heavier on fuel, give out more harmful emisions and are bigger than many 4X4s, but these points are of, ignored. A 5 ton 4X4? Apart from lorries, I've never seen one. My Discovery weighs 2 tons, has a 2.5 litre engine and does around 30mpg. Gas guzzling? Hardly. Huge? No longer or wider than a Mondeo. Lets abn all cars which do over the legal speed limit, after all, more accidents are caused by speed than by the fact a car has 4 wheel drive. Oh dear, problem is that means ALL cars should be banned!

Because moaning seems to centre around SUV or ‘soft—roaders’. People in the Town/City moan because they take up to much space and the closest these vehicles see to off-roading is mounting the kerb. I, however, come from an agricultural community and these vehicles can’t tackle a flat wet field to justify there existence, hence why I refer to them as soft-roaders.

Forbys belong in the country where there is plenty of space, I live in a village, people tend to use them as weapons rather than vehicles. Mines bigger than yours, my opinion is what does it matter what size it is as long as it gets you from A to B.
Another gripe I have got is why is is that old farts drive around in sports cars, when they look total idiots. Mid life crisis or what!

Hahahahahahaha, lulu obviously owns some tiny crappy car, and his bitterness shows with the comment about not being able to afford 4x4 insurance.

No matter WHAT you do or HOW you do it, SOMEONE is going to be unhappy and complain. Do what makes YOU happy and don't lose sleep over what anyone thinks.
VINNY, could you rewrite that answer in a language we could understand? Hard to tell if I agree with you or not.

Well, they are a problem.
Besides your problems with the monthly installments.
The are not cars suitable for city driving - too big and
too thirsty. I am sure Mum can get the kids to school in
something more suitable.
