SINCE HAVING A ROOT CANAL ON A TOOTH MAKES IT BRITTLE TO POTENTIAL FRACTURE, A CROWN IS RECOMMENDED TREATMENT FOLLOWING A ROOT CANAL.
LET'S SAY YOU CHOOSE NOT TI GET THE CROWN, THIS IS A POTENTIAL BREAK READY TO HAPPEN. NOBODY KNOWS WHERE OR WHEN?
SURE CROWNS ARE EXPENSIVE, BUT EXTRACTING THIS TOOTH AND PLACING A BRIDGE TO REPLACE THE MISSING TOOTH IS MORE EXPENSIVE.

After root canal treatment, the tooth is weak and brittle. It is weak because the center of the tooth was removed to get at the infected nerve; only the sides of the tooth are left for support. And it is more brittle because the nerve and blood supply are gone.
If a tooth breaks, it is much more difficult to repair. Your dentist typically recommends a crown to cover and protect a root canaled tooth. The crown helps to prevent it from breaking.
Making a crown is the last step typically done in root canal treament. It will restore the damaged part, protect your tooth, and give you back your smile.

Well if you're getting a root canal then you need a crown afterwards, if your tooth is damaged at all or has a cavity then you NEED to get a root canal before you put the crown on, your tooth will get infected. Basically you can't have just one, you need both, it's not a one or the other situation. Unless your tooth is fine (no cavities) then go get your damn crown, I don't know why you'd need to worry about having surgery in the first place? Oh, and getting a crown is nearly painless, don't sweat it.

I didn't get a crown on a root canal, and because the tooth gets brittle I had a chunk fall off. SO! Now I have to pay for it (even though I have health insurance) because it's already been worked on. I would recommend it too.

No, you don't have to, but it is best that you do. I had a root canal about about 5 years ago and never got a crown!

No you do not have to get a crown, it depends on the size of the hole that you have when they are finished. My son just had a root canal and all the dentist did was fill it with the white filling material.

If it's a back tooth, I agree with Dr. Albert's answer 100%.
It is better to do a crown to prevent trouble than try to fix things if the tooth breaks in an unfavorable way.

Yes, you have to purchase that neat Beemer for your Dentist!
Unfortunately, you will need a crown as the tooth is no longer
'supported' by the roots - no feeding - so it must be protected

you should, like someone else said the tooth might start breaking off, and even if it doesn't, because there is no blood flow to it anymore it will start to turn dark grey.
sometimes children wont have theirs crowned because if it isn't their permanent molars then it isn't necessary sometimes because they will be replaced.
