it is a huge exaggeration! in reality, what it is referring to, is paradox.
if you didn't exist, everything that you would have done, doesn't get done, so it effects everyone that came in contact with you accordingly.
so, usually it is exaggerated, but it is real!

The butterfly effect is an analogy used to describe the sensitive dependence chaotic systems have on their initial conditions. In that sense, a butterfly does not casaue a typhoon, but we cannot measure enough of the world's atmosphere with enough certainty to predict the weather for any length of time. In a real system or a computer model, a temperature difference less than 0.1 degrees celsius or a wind speed diffeence below the measuring threshold of the anemometer could make the difference between rain 4 days out and sunshine.
In the sense that it is an analogy it is not "real", but it serves very well to explain that small changes can have big consequences in chaotic systems.

Everything is connected - everything has an effect on something else. Yes - the butterfly effect is true. In fact, the only reason computers can't 100% predict weather is because they cannot take the decimal place far enough out - like to add in the tiny effects of a flap of a butterfly wing.

It's basically a lesson in cause and effect. While something like it 'could' happen - extreme examples of that nature are unlikely.
If I recall, it comes from an old Science Fiction/Time Travel story in which a big game hunter went back in time to kill a dinosaur and accidentally killed a butterfly. That event altered the flow of events through time enough to change his future when he returned.

Sort of. When I finished basic training in the Air Force I was given a choice of becomming a Vietnamese Language Translator or a Computer Programmer. I was asked how my grades were in German in college. I truthfully told them "Terrible, Sir, Terrible". And I was immediately told I would be trained as a programmer. This later led to a successful career as a programmer when I was discharged. If I had been trained as a Vietnamese translator I would have had a worthless occupation in a few more years. Sometimes bad grades can actually work to your advantage.

It is totally made up. There are not enough natural disasters to account for all the butterflies in the world.
