Your heart begins to pump faster, you start to sweat from the extra heat which can actually make you dehydrate much more quickly than with normal exercise and water/gatorade.

You also may begin to shake slightly as if you were nervous.

I work for an energy drink manufacturer but we (don't laugh everyone) manufacture a natural and healthy energy drink. The sweetener is natural and the stimulant is natural. Our energy drink is even safe for people with type I & II diabetis but as always check with your doctor first. This is the first energy drink to hit the market in the form of a powder meaning that you can mix it with the beverage of your choice. Many people who are on these have experienced some weight loss but they have also experienced natural energy as well. None of the heart racing, jump start from the caffeine or sugar high and no crash down as it is all natural and healthy. If you would like 2 FREE SAMPLES of this energy drink then go to my profile or to the link.

It depends on the type of drink. Gatorade, for instance, has electrolytes which replenish what is sweated out. Most that are out on the market now though, like Red bull and similars have only caffiene and sugar which give the illusion of energy because of alertness or sudden rise in "movement". These are temporary fixes though and will not last long. In the long run, vitamins and a glass of water will do your body better.

energy drinks provide calories in the form of simple carbohydrates for quick energy.
B vitamins to sustain the energy and to give energy for after the suger has worn off.
and caffine to trick your brain into releasing adrenoline to supliment the B vitamins and sugar and to keep your brain from realizing your muscles are tired so they wont recognize fatigue as soon.

and as for Justin's answer they wont hurt you if you drink more than one in 7 hours. i drank a triple size rockstar (32 oz) and then a liter of soda all in the course of 2 hours. that is enough caffine to kill a small animal. all i did was take a massive pee. the caffine warnings are for pregnant women and young children whos bodies cant handle it.

Although regular consumption will jolt my insides, one just to stay awake for that long ride to work in the morning every month or more beats getting in an accident.
