I believe it took several weeks if not months for the papal Bull to reach Luther explaining his excommunication I'd assume Luther was busy chaining down bibles in his Wittenberg library so that people wouldn't run off with them. By the way this is actually true.

Non-catholics love to explain people didn't get to read the bible in Catholic Churches because it was chained up I tell them go to Wittenberg and learn something new.

djm Masters of Theology ? you've got to be kidding what tent revivial are you referred from?

To answer your question, I am sure he was threatened plenty of times by the Pope and the church officials with excommunication. There had been many envoys and writings denouncing Luther and his works. In 1518 Pope Leo X, dismissed Luther as "a drunken German" who "when sober will change his mind." So it is hard to answer your question with out more information.

I guess his official “warning” didn’t come until June 1520 when Luther received the Papal Bull Exsurge Domine, to which on December 10, 1520 Martin Luther burned his copy of the bull.

The excommunication did not come until January 1521, when Pope Leo X issued Decet Romanum Pontificem excommunicating Martin Luther from the Roman catholic church, because he did not recant his teachings or beliefs. Remember, excommunication does not happen quickly because church discipline always allowed sometime for someone to recant their statements/beliefs. Also, I am sure the Roman catholic church needed time to formulate a response. The whole process from 1517 to 1521 took 4 years.

During the Diet of Worms Luther was quoted as saying, "Unless I shall be convinced by the testimonies of the Scriptures or by clear reason, ... I neither can nor will make any retraction, since it is neither safe nor honorable to act against conscience; God help me! Amen!"
Luther didnt become an "outlaw” until the Edict of Worms was issued in May 1521 which declared Luther an outlaw and banning his literature.

I hope this helps

Martin Luther found and read the Bible. He published the things he found about the Catholic Church that he thought didn't line up with Bible teachings.
