I have a twelve year old Chihuahua and a nine year old Chihuahua, mother and daughter. They are housed in a crate which contains a dog basket with a pillow and a blanket in it and a "pee wee pad" if I'm going to be gone for a while. The dogs are used to being put in the crate when I'm gone, plus they gladly sleep in it at night.

For the last three weeks, my older dog has been getting ill in the cage. It's very weird, it has happened one time each of the three weeks. I come home and find that she has had diarreah and has vomitted. I clean their cage and wash their bedding and she is fine for another week.

What could be wrong with her? I hope she doesn't have bowel cancer or something - she is old... It's just weird how the symptoms last a day and go away and then come back a week later.

I haven't changed their food or treats or water, etc.

It's hard to believe you expect people on here to diagnose your dog. Don't you at the very least after having her for so many years, owe her a visit to the vet? They'd be able to tell you if she has bowel cancer or something!!

I hope your older chihuahua will be okay. She could be getting ill in her older age. Getting her a Vet check and mentioning what you did about cleaning the cage and her being better for a week.
It could be coincidental or related to what is going on with her. Hope you will give us an update.

Yes, your dog is becoming a grandma now. I would suggest to go see you veterinarian for a blood test on her. She might have some have mild problems with her internal organs (liver, stomach, or kidneys). For now, the problem seems to be mild and identifying it in the early stage might prevent it from worsening and might even save her life if there is something your vet can do, like changing the diet, giving her an appropriate supplementation or medication.

Good luck with your little loved one and I hope she gets better soon!

Sorry, I'm not psychic and can't answer the question from here. You should take her to a vet for bloodwork, and take a stool sample with you. You might also need to do x rays and or an ultrasound. Sometimes, if it is cancer, it won't show up even with all these diagnostics, but it is at least worth looking to see if she has something that can be treated. Good Luck!!

I would definately take her to the vet. If something is wrong, they could find it in time to save her. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 plus years generally so even though she is 9, she could still have at least a few years left in her. Good luck!

if this is chronic, and reoccuring alot then i would take her to the vet. she probably needs medication. it might be the food you are feeding her. read the ingredients if corn is in the first two or three ingredients, it is not a good source of nutrition and some dogs can have food intolerance. good brands (all sold at petco) are Organix, Solid Gold, Nutro, Natural Balance... once dogs get older they get more expensive, but they are worth it!

Are you sure it is your older dog that is getting ill? I would take both dogs to the vet for a thorough check up. Don't delay. Even though it is not happening often it is something that should be checked out right away.

if they are crated togetger how do you know who is doing this?
sometimes a change in your schedule can stress them ..or a blockage from a bone or toy... or just acid reflux from years of processed food. try a new kibble called NUTRO'S LAMB AND RICE... this food is for aiding in digestion as well as skin and shiny coat. get the older dog formula, its great food. no corn ! which is hard to digest and in most dog food.
good luck
