I am looking at volunteering in Louisiana, and possibly doing so through this organization, however I am not sure if it sits right with me. They had me fill out an application and everything but I was accepted to volunteer without ever having to talk to anyone. It just seems a little odd.

That is very odd. Don't do it. Go with your instincts. Someone should have met with you and discussed more indepth their organization and what you would be doing as a volunteer.
I hate to say don't volunteer because everyone needs them. But I think your time and talent could be better used in a better organization.

In canada we have local committeee of Charity foundations.
the best guys to know are the local firefighters or Ambulances. they normally know most local charity and or emergency communities that are Legit
