Look Life is a bummer and then you die... Seriously, Depression, the kind that comes on for no good reason and just seems to get worse and worse no matter what you do is a disease. It is known as Endogenous Depression and comes on from within. There is a physical reason you feel that way and it does not have a whole lot to do with being a wimp or the fact that your momma does not like you. There is a physical disruption in the chemicals that make your brain operate properly. Dopamine, a nero-transmitter is being destroyed prematurely in your nervous system or the serotonin levels which eventually become dopamine are lower then normal. These dysfunctions are as much a problem as is Diabetes. It has a genetic competent and it can be inherited in some cases. Whatever is the cause, dangling from parachutes or eating herbs is not very functional as far as shaking this. Modern medicines do offer some hope, and should be managed for you by a knowledgeable professional. There is a depression that exists for some who have suffered a great loss, or some other life altering event in their lives. This is known as Exogenous Depression. It can be experienced by anyone who has had such a life altering experience, and is usually temporary. Therefore people who have had such a depression think that it can be altered by changing your attitude etc. It can be helped more readily with therapy then does the Endogenous form which truly requires medication as well as some therapy. Whatever your situation is your living in a great time to get help. Check out the website below, and get some real information about this problem, not the usual dribble found on Yahoo answers.

Long term depression has NOTHING to do with attitude or outlook on life. I am ex-army, black belt, skydiver etc -- mister anything for a thrill. For some unknown reason depression hit me and I fought it for two years. I was at the point of taking my own life. I finally decided to see a doctor. It is a medical condition that can be effectively treated. Mine was treated with a metallic salt. It was that simple for me. others may need a different drug. See a professional. A psychiatrist. Do not be embarrassed about your condition. I talk about it freely now to other people and compare it to being a diabetic.
Get some help dude. No need to suffer. Nothing but love to you.

To tell you the truth I personally do not believe that there is any permanent escape from depression. From experience there have been times where there is not one thing wrong with my life yet i still feel hollow and miserable. They way I have learned to deal with it is acknowledge it, know that the emptiness is a disease and to do not allow it to control your life. A psychologist or therapist or even close confidant can help you get through the especially bleak periods, but always remember that no matter what, youre healthy, and live a much better life than most in this world can imagine and never let depression control your actions.

Not likely to a level you might attain with counseling, and if you are lacking seratonin levels through the synapses in your brain, it is Only with medication that you will achieve your highest level of well-being.
I'm aware of the "natural remedies" available, but sometimes what we think will cure us may only make it worse. We should let the professionals in the medical field oversee matters that affect our lives to such a degree ie., depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia, etc.
I've attached a site I discovered which covers many aspects of depression and skills you might use to ease the mind and make life more tolerable. Read each heading, they are pretty interesting.

I had depression when I was a kid and pre teen. I don't have it anymore. Around 60% of people who suffer from depression will find it will go away on its own, but if you are feeling suicidal then it's wise to seek help. By seeking help you could speed the process. But anyway, to answer your question, it is possible.

I think that you would need to exercise and eat right to get out of depression. It will also help to talk to a professional or trusted member of your church/ temple.
