In a lot of cases, religion is pretty much handed down from the parents, the family, the school, the neighborhood, the community, and so on. It's difficult to isolate the influences of others in a social structure. So most likely, a kid will have gotten a great many beliefs from the influence of his peers.
Ideally the parent should instill and help develop all the logic and intellectual capabilities of their children such that the children themselves can at a later time garner up enough curiosity, interest, and motivation to reexamine and reevaluate what they've been "taught" earlier in life and make any profound changes as necessary.

well, lets say someone told you that you should look both ways before crossing the street, but you said, "Don't confuse me!" and walked straight into on-coming traffic.
Now, lets say by the greatest luck imaginable, you get to the otherside unscathed, or, coincidentally when the light happened to be green for you. Would this not strengthen the un-truth?
We are not born with caution and self-preservation. We have parents that constantly run around after us until we learn. When we hear something that's right, it makes sense. When we go against what is right, we get hurt.

I always squawk out what I hear. I try not to do it too loud, though. (Sorry, I couldn't resist. :-P)
I agree, though, many people just seem to follow their parents as far as religion is concerned. If you grow up in a Christian household, and you're still religious as an adult, 999 times out a thousand, that religion is Christianity. Not that that's a bad thing, but the family environment is definitely one of the biggest influences.

Believing in God is not just a matter of faith, because reason and logic in harmony with common sense also allow us to discern an intelligent design whose author can only be the One who created it all.

We can't know. We only know what we know and are intelligent enough to figure out.
