When these nerves become involved (to include the cranial nerves) there is an inflammatory process to involve those cranial nerves and thus the headache.. which will follow the course of the nerve or nerves so effected. The tingling is just the minor compression of the nerve to reduce the ability to pick up the impulses properly.. sort of like when your arm goes to sleep but on recovery of sensation there is also a tingling.. or, after having a shot by the dentist, that feeling is present as the function of the nerve returns to normal.

Yes! I was in an auto accident years ago and damaged my occipital nerve. I had never experienced migraines before the accident. My neurologist had to treat me for headaches and other pain with Topamax, fiorecet nerve block shots, and Vicodin along with physical therapy for stiffness. After a little over a year, I don't take any medications and have no headaches anymore.

Indirectly, yes. Your muscles tense because you are in pain, and the tension kind of rolls through your scalp and facial muscles. V`iola, headache! So when my mother asks me to give her a massage to relieve her headaches, I actually start low down on her back and work up so there is nothing left to restart the headach when I'm done.
