Dont let the movies fool you dalmations is a breed that has been messed up by irresponsible breeders who have inbreed them to keep up with the demand when such movies like 101 dalmations came out. they are now having a lot of health problems from dogs purchased during that time frame. the dalmation breed is really not for children.

ALL dogs can be aggreissive. It's all in how they are raised.

As was stated earlier a lot has to do with the quality of the dogs. We have ALWAYS had Dalmatians for pets and show. You just have to do your homework (as you should with any puppy purchase) and go with a good breeder that will screen for health and hearing problems.

We have NEVER had a Dal that was anything but social and loving. They were bred to be carriage dogs, so they do have a relatively high energy, but not as high as others. We have had them in apartments in the past and done great with them. Our Dal now is a male and incredibley sweet and gentle, not to mention lazy. He was raised in a home with adult children and no small pets, and when we got him he did GREAT with kids and other small pets.

So to me it's not fair to label them. As with every breed it depends on the way they were raised. Even a lesser quality dog can be a wonderful family pet. That's evident in that most breeders will offer a "pet" puppy for a much lower price than they will their show/breeding stock dogs.

Dalmations are the not best family dogs. They tend to bond with one person and can be snappish. They are also prone to deafness which is not a good combination with children as a deaf dog is easily startled and a startled dog is likely to bite.

If it is not deaf and raised from a puppy with a family it is less likely to be aggressive though. Children should be taught respect for any living creature and should never be allowed to mistreat any animal.

We used to raise dalmations and we never had any trouble with any of the dogs, or puppies. Even after they went to their families. Ours were raised around kids, and they were so friendly.

I have known two that did. They are not a good dog to have with cats or kids. They can be aggressive and the ones that I have had the pleasure of dealing with tended toward FEAR BITING....the WORST kind of biter there is. Sadly, the Dalmatian craze caused over breeding and the temperament problems we are seeing now.

If brought up from a puppy with children and trained properly most Dalmatians get along well with children.

All dogs will attack children, or anyone, if provoked. It depends, but if you think they might, then it might not be a good idea to have a dog...or just a small one.

Any dog is capable of attacking. Breed is irrelevant.

Probably not, unless the nasty little bastards piss the dog off. If that's the case, I'm entirely on the dog's side... rip their little faces off, Fido... You GO dog...
