Clearly there is no way to change their thinking, so as goes the saying, "living well is the best revenge" so should all of us.

I can think of nothing that speaks louder than an atheist living a consummately good and happy life, feeling whole and complete, contributing to society, treating people with compassion and respect, while demonstrating all the positive virtues that Christians seem to universally admire, but have such difficulty achieving themselves.

Take that!

I think you have hit upon something. I have heard several christians ask me how I can be happy if I believe that I have nothing to live for (meaning I have nothing to die for) since I do not believe in heaven. Also, I have heard many ask how atheists have morals if they do not turn to the bible for guidence.

These types of comments used to frustrate me but I plan to just take your advice and live well. If the christians around me can see that I am happy and at peace it may change their views on atheists. Even if they dont change it will be nice to not even care how they see me.

That may sound superficial but considering I come from a religious family it is hard to stand up to their negativity.

That is very good when an atheist does that. And yes, a significant number of Christians do have a difficulty doing that, so consumed in their "moral agenda". Even religious homeless shelters will turn away people for being gay, it's awful. The Salvation Army won't hire gay people. I am always reluctant to give to charities because of how they would treat someone who is gay or transgendered if they came for help. Because I have been in that situation myself. We need more homeless shelters/charities that aren't based on religion.

well, I don't know if it qualifies as revenge, maybe because you need to say it with a Ricardo Montalban accent.

But it is certainly a good approach to living. I'm a Christian myself, but have a great respect for anyone who treats the people they meet with compassion and respect, no matter what their belief or unbelief. May your days be filled with compassion and respect, both given and received.

Nope, the best revenge would be them seeing the unbelievers in Heaven. That will definitely cook their goose. Surely people like Gandhi (was he a non believer) or Buddha deserve a place up there.

Too bad that they will put so much effort into living such an exemplary life only to have it end up in hell. If you are going to be such a do- gooder why not become a Christian so you can go to Heaven. I would rather be a poor believer than a rich atheist. It is usually the unbelievers that admire money and gain anyway.Go for it!

Yes we Christians sometimes have difficulty demonstrating those value, But are you suggesting that an Atheist wouldn't?

What does it matter to you what Christians or any other person thinks of god? If they are living values compatible to your's, what's the big deal? It sounds to me like you're a little too concerned with pissing the "Christains" off ... or are you just trying to be happy without religion (of any sort).

So, I think your idea is good. It's good to be a contributing member of society. However, your motive it stupid. Why do you care so much what they think if you're so sure they're wrong?

Being positive or sincere will not get you into heaven. I can sincerely believe that your car will run on chocolate milk but that doesn't make it the truth. You can be since and good and still be wrong. Jesus said, I am the way the truth and the life..." A fact is a fact even if no one else believes it.

Ah but there IS a way to change their thinking. I'm living proof. A bible quiz team, soul winning, camp counsellor who once made a biology grad student I was dating BANG HIS HEAD against the wall while discussing evolution.

Eventually I came around. If there is hope for me, there is hope for anyone.

But I agree that living a generous, kind life is a nice light in the darkness. Happily it is also it's own reward! :)

Although I am not an Atheist, I find truth and sincerity in your statement, and the wish for all people to come to the realization that the most we can hope for ourselves, so shall we hope for everyone else, regardless of our differences. Good for you!

Like Grandma always said, "Kill 'em with kindness!" So many of them are fake phonies that I have trouble being as nice as you are .maybe I can take a lesson from you!

Thanks for the post.....
