the number on the tab is the fret(the bars on the guitar) number and the the line that it's on represents which string to play.

I would suggest two things:

1. go to a local music store and ask about lessons. It is amazing how much you can learn if you have an expert there to help you solve your problems and to get you back on course when you're "not getting it." A good teacher will help you learn things correctly the first time. This doesnt have to be a lifetime committment. Just learn the basics for a month or two, and then decide how you want to proceed from there.

2. If the Private teacher thing isn't practical for you, get a good book or DVD on beginning guitar. Janet Davis' book "Anybody Can Play the Guitar" is a good one. Other good titles come from Mel Bay. There's even a "Guitar for Dummies" that is not half bad. Check out Amazon.com, Borders, or your local music store. These will also show you how to read the "printed" stuff like tabs (tablature), chord diagrams, and musical notation. Personally, I like to start with chord diagrams and strumming before getting into tabs and notation.

If you want to learn to play, the most important thing is to start playing and DON'T QUIT! If you don't sound good, don't worry--just don't stop. Hardly anybody sounds good when they start. I tell my students, " You gotta make the bad sounds before you make the good sounds." Even the bad sounds are helping your hands get stronger and more coordinated.

Good Luck! I'm rootin' for you!

The best guitar to start on is an inexpensive electric ($200-300), a small amp with some effects built it (w/a line in f/CD player and headphone jacks ($125-300), and some extra light strings - all available at your local music store...
There's less tension on the strings, so you'll be able to play longer before your fingertips start hurting... After a month or so, you'll start building up callouses, then, you can play longer...

Don't expect too much too soon and you won't get as discouraged... It's a fine motor skill and after awhile, your fingers will learn where to go to form different chords... In the beginning, just try to make the chords sound clean... That is, after you've placed your fingers, you should be able to pick each string and hear a clean tone... Sometimes, your finger will touch another string and mute it... It takes practice and you should just practice switching from one clean chord to the next... Stick with it for at least a year, it gets much easier after the first 3 months or so... One VERY important thing: PLAY AT LEAST AN HOUR EVERY DAY! This helps your nerves learn quicker and improvement is more easily achieved...

On Tabs? Oh, that's easy :D. Each individual line stands for a different string. The line on the bottom stands for the thickest string. For example, say it says, "6" on the line, you hold down the 6th fret. (the little square thing) Strumming is also really easy. It's almost like a drum, too. You have to keep a steady beat, and bring the pick up and down in a pattern.

Tab was invented so that you don't have to learn how to read music.
5 fingers. 6 strings. a picture is worth a thousand words.
Tab is a graphical representation that diagrams which finger is placed on which fret. Watch a video, read a website. If you still cannot figure it out, how did you start your computer up and get to this website?
