The Vatican is located in Italy. It is an independant state and not governed by the Italian government (thank God). The Vatican is the seat (headquarters) of the Catholic Church. Within its walls lives the Pope (currently Pope Benedict XVI) along with several cardinals appointed to specific roles within the church. The Cardinals meet there at times during the year to decide on issues and policy. Much research is done of the Bible and other religious writings to support the Churches position on issues like abortion, divorce, support of the poor and ill, etc. The Vatican also monitors the many Catholic charitires and missionaries, like Mother Theresa's order in India.
In addition the Swiss Guards live within Vatican City. The Swiss guards are just that - Swiss. Swizterland has always been a neutral country so some 500 years ago the Vatican invited a division of the Swiss Army to protect the Pope, Cardinals and other officials.
In addition to the day to day administration of the Catholic Church - Vatican City has its own bank, post office and other services. It is probably most famous for St Peters Cathedral, the largest church in the world, designed and built primarily by Michelangelo, and the Sistine Chapel. The Chapel, famous for the painted cieling by Michelangelo and the main wall painted by the same, was at one time used by the Cardinals to elect a new pope.
Christians and non Christians visit Vatican City by the hundreds of thousands each year. The art and architecture are amazing,, the history extrodinary and, despite the crowds, the solemnity and spirituality is astounding...
