Cold sores are caused by the HERPES SIMPLEX Virus. this virus is with you for the rest of your life, but isn't transmittable through sexual contact. It is brought on by stress, sunlight and hormones. The sub microscopic virus hides within you nervous system and is brought out by the reasons listed above. It can be treated with antiviral therapy while active, with drugs like acyclovir or valacyclovir and denovir cream. some people get relief from an OTC product called abreva.
PS-chicken pox is caused by herpes zoster as is shingles

Its basically the same virus that causes chicken pox. Some people are prone to them and some people never get them. There are great medications out now that can be put on the cold sore at the first sign. They work really well. My mom has problems with them, but my dad and I never had a problem. Contact your doctor and see what he or she suggests as a medication. It really works and cuts the time at least in half of the life of the sore. It also prevents it from getting really nasty looking, if you use it as directed.

The herpes virus that lives in your body is the cause, but stress , sun, and fatigue tend to lower your system's defenses and allow the virus to attack..I find that a quick treatment with plain ice keeps them from forming..The key word is QUICK.. When you first feel the tingling, put an ice cube on the spot for a minute or two, rest for a minute and repeat several times.
