I don't want to buy a Vtech that she will grow out of very quickly. I want something that will last her for quite a while.

My 5 year old wants a computer too but I don't think it is wise to put a computer in her room. I let my 5 and 7 year old play games on my computer in the living room. She has a V-smile and LOVES it! I don't think it is a waste of money because my 7 year old loves it too and to play something A LOT for 3 years isn't bad when it only costs $60! I have friends that buy their kids 4-wheelers, ipods, etc. I just think, why rush them to grow up so quickly??? They have their whole life to be on the computer and tap on ipods, but not very long to run and play outside or color in coloring books and just be kids. I am trying to raise my kids to appreciate the simple things in an age of excess. Good luck with whatever you decide!

Actually, unless you have a prodigy who is operating at 3rd grade level, the V-Tech is a good idea. Very structured but looks like the real thing. They have excellent educational programs aimed at a 5yo. The V-Tech notebook series is very durable and can take rough treatment.

A laptop is not going to last quite a while. Laptops are not durable. I love the commercial where they drop the laptop. Even that "durable" ibm does not really survive that drop every time. But even if your daughter kid gloves the laptop, within 4 years it's going to be time to replace it.

In 4 years, at 9, she will be ready to take better care of a laptop and will have had experience on a desk top computer.

I would look for a cheap standard computer. It will get them used to using a proper computer, especially as now some schools (like my sons) start them at 5years old on them in class. You will find she will soon be able to used a mouse better than you and if you want to get any software there is a range of cheap educational games etc that fits in with the school key stages.

Get a standard desktop or laptop. Something that costs moderate, and will last for quite a bit. I suggest purchasing a compaq laptop, or a dell desk top. But don't get a Dell laptop--they don't function so well. A compaq generally works smoothly. I've had mine for about a year now, and it still runs like new. Just remember to delete extraneous files that are saved to the hard drive if you hook the internet to whatever computer you buy. Files like that onlt clog the system.

why not encourage the child to occupy herself by other means something that will encourage her creativity, as well as physical play. By the time she's in junior school she'll be using a pc everyday. A shame to waste the opportunity for independent thinking and interaction with a world not on a computer screen.

I am wondering why a 5 year old would need a computer, why not start with books , and paper and crayons, paints, educational toys....I am concerned that if a 5 year old is using a computer, he or she will be bored with things that do not plug in.....maybe it would be wiser to wait a few years, and if he or she wants to try a computer occasionally the one that you are using now could fill that need.....with constant guidance. Just my 2 cents worth...sorry?

buy em a PC. theres hundreds of games for kids, eductional and fun... even mavis becon teaches typing.. our daughters loved it... and they started at about 3.. mouse control playing cards on mums knee... it teaches them the keyboard, and mousing, and gets the confident about a PC... and theyer cheap enough, they arent easy to break... and its probably the best ever pressie they could get..

many years ago my dad took us, hi sons into the workshop and taught us how to use each and every piece of machinery in it... we learned fractions and engineering decimals alongside grinding milling and welding... and we were there from age 7 or 8... almost 50 years later, me and my brothers are all highly skilled engineers of one sort or another...

my daughters dont want a life in heavy engineering.. so we gave tehm the tools for their generation..PC's.. and now ones 16 the other 12, and they are both at the top of their classes... all because they know computers.. they know what it can do...

you can batter a PC .. and itll keep on running.. toys are toys, they break and are very limiting...

eldest daughters friends all got Ipods... jess got an Ipaq... her friends all want ipaqs this year... i wonder why.
